Weekend Tofino Surf Camp

Join us for an unforgettable weekend surf adventure in Tofino, on the wild West Coast of Vancouver Island. This exciting youth program begins Friday evening with group transportation from Victoria, setting the stage for a weekend of waves, wilderness, and connection.

On Saturday and Sunday morning, campers take part in professionally guided surf sessions led by skilled instructors in a safe, supportive environment. Teens learn how to catch waves, pop up, and ride with confidence - experiencing the unmatched thrill of standing on a surfboard for the first time. When not surfing, the group explores the stunning coastal landscapes of Pacific Rim National Park, hiking beaches and forest trails, exploring the scenic Wild Pacific Trail, and a visit to the local Ucluelet Aquarium.

Evenings are spent cooking healthy meals, playing games, relaxing with new friends, and enjoying our accommodations. After a final surf session on Sunday morning, the group returns to Victoria late afternoon - wrapping up a weekend filled with adventure, learning, and unforgettable memories. This all-inclusive surf weekend blends outdoor adventure, skill-building, and West Coast exploration into one incredible experience.

    The Experience

The journey from Victoria across Vancouver Island to Tofino is an adventure in itself, offering stunning coastal and forest scenery along the way. Upon arrival, surfers are immersed in one of the most remarkable landscapes in Canada, encompassing Ucluelet, Tofino, and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Expansive white-sand beaches, rolling surf, wind-shaped shoreline pines, and ancient coastal rainforest combine with the welcoming atmosphere of a small surf town to create a truly unforgettable setting.

Teens experience this powerful natural environment in a uniquely immersive way - on a surfboard. Surfing offers an unmatched connection to the ocean and encourages respect for the forces of nature while building confidence, focus, and resilience.

This is more than a typical surf camp. Evenings are spent in Ucluelet in our indoor accommodations - no camping for this crew. Surfers work together to prepare healthy meals, developing independence and teamwork in a supportive group setting. During the day, participants receive expert instruction from experienced surf coaches, followed by time exploring the surrounding area through hikes and ecological discovery.

Throughout the weekend, teens are having fun while learning to care for themselves, work collaboratively, and unplug from technology - replacing screens with meaningful experiences, shared responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

    Safety

Western Educational Adventures takes safety seriously. While we’re committed to providing exceptional experiences, our highest priority is ensuring every participant returns home safe and sound. We believe that feeling safe is essential to learning, growth, and fully engaging in the experience. Our staff are certified in wilderness first aid and bring years of experience managing risk in outdoor environments. You won’t find a more qualified or prepared team.

    Food and Food Allergies

We believe that a good experience starts with good nutrition. We strive to provide quality, simple, wholesome meals with limited processed ingredients – in addition to the occasional smores and other tasty treats. This is part of why we include our participants in all meal planning, purchasing and cooking.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What ages can attend the Surf Camp?

The Surf Camp is designed for youth ages 10–15. Participants should be fit and be able to swim well.

How physically demanding is the trip?

Participants should have a moderate fitness level and be prepared for 4–6 hours of activity per day.

Where does the trip take place?

This expedition takes place at Tofino & Ucluelet, BC

Can I rent gear from WEA?

Yes. WEA offers gear rentals for essential items including backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and warm sweaters. Some additional items may also be available depending on inventory and trip needs — please contact us to confirm.

All rental gear is cleaned, maintained, and inspected before each use. Rentals can be reserved during registration or added later by contacting our office. Quantities are limited; please book early.

Where can I find the required gear and clothing?

Most items on our packing list can be found at local outdoor or general retailers such as MEC (Mountain Equipment Company), Canadian Tire, and thrift stores like Value Village for affordable second-hand gear.

We also have partnerships with Robinson’s Outdoor Store and Mountain Warehouse — both offer discounts to WEA families when you show your WEA invoice or registration receipt at checkout.

Borrowing gear from friends or relatives is welcome as long as it’s in good condition, fits properly, and suits variable coastal weather. If you’re unsure about an item, contact our office for recommendations or to discuss rental options.

What do surfers eat on the trip?

Meals are hearty, nutritious, and designed for wilderness travel. Surfers help plan, pack, and cook with leaders — a key part of the expedition experience. Typical menus include pasta, rice bowls, burritos, pancakes, and campfire treats. We accommodate most dietary needs with advance notice.

How are safety and supervision handled?

All WEA staff are trained in First Aid, CRP-C and outdoor risk management. Supervision ratios are low and staff have extensive experience supporting children with differing personalities and abilities. Including those who may need extra attention or guidance in the outdoor environment.

Can friends sign up together and be grouped on the same trip?

Yes — friends may register for the same session and request to be grouped together. We do our best to accommodate these requests when space and program logistics allow.

While attending with friends can be fun, we encourage surfers to join independently when possible. Coming on their own helps participants build confidence, independence, inclusivity, and new friendships — all key parts of the expedition experience.

What if the weather is bad?

The program runs rain or shine. Surfers learn to stay dry and comfortable using proper rain gear, tarps, and teamwork. In cases of extreme weather (e.g., high winds or unsafe travel), leaders may modify the route or camp in sheltered locations until conditions improve.

What is your cancellation or refund policy?

Please review our current General Terms & Conditions (PDF) for details about cancellations, refunds, and program changes. Policies may vary by season and program type.

Who can I contact for more information?
